What are PFOS and PFOA?
PFOS and PFOA are man-made chemicals that belong to a larger group called PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). PFAS are used in many everyday products to make them water-resistant, nonstick, or stain-resistant. They are often called “forever chemicals” because they do not break down easily.
Why are PFAS sometimes called “forever chemicals”?
PFAS do not naturally break down in the environment or in the human body. Over time, they can build up in people, animals, and the environment through a process called bioaccumulation.
Have most people been exposed to PFAS?
Yes. Almost every person in the United States has detectable levels of PFAS in their blood. Finding PFAS in blood does not necessarily mean it will cause a health effect.
How can people be exposed to PFAS?
People can be exposed to PFAS through:
- Contact with stain-resistant carpeting and water-repellent clothing.
- Drinking contaminated public or private well water.
- Eating fish from contaminated water.
- Breathing or swallowing contaminated dust.
- Eating food packaged in materials that contain PFAS.
What consumer products may contain PFAS?
Products that may contain PFAS include:
- Paints, varnishes, and sealants.
- Grease-resistant food packaging (fast food wrappers, pizza boxes, microwave popcorn bags).
- Nonstick cookware.
- Stain-resistant carpets, upholstery, and fabrics.
- Water-resistant clothing.
- Cleaning products.
- Personal care products and cosmetics.
What are the potential health effects of PFAS exposure?
Studies indicate that exposure to PFOS and PFOA over certain levels may be associated with:
- Low birth weight and developmental effects.
- Accelerated puberty.
- Certain cancers.
- Liver disease.
- Effects on the immune system.
- Thyroid effects.
- Changes in cholesterol levels.
How is Delaware addressing PFAS exposure?
Delaware is investigating PFAS releases into the environment and addressing exposure through actions by DNREC and the Division of Public Health. Delaware currently follows the U.S. EPA health advisory limit of 70 parts per trillion (PPT) for PFOS and PFOA in drinking water and is working to establish state-level maximum contaminant levels.
Is Delaware recommending an alternate drinking water source?
The Delaware Division of Public Health Office of Drinking Water is not recommending an overall alternate source of drinking water at this time. Any recommendations would be made on a case-by-case basis.
